What is alt text?
Image alternative text (“alt text”) is a short description that conveys the purpose of an image.
Why is alt text important?
Alternative text for images provides information about the image for people who can’t see it or may have difficulty understanding it.
These include:
- People who are blind and use a screen reader to access the information on a page
- People with low vision that magnify the screen and also use text-to-speech
- Some people with with learning or reading disabilities who have information read aloud
What to look for
- If you use an image, make sure it has alt text.
- Alt text should briefly describe the image’s content or function
- Avoid images with text
- Use real text, not images of text.
- Charts, graphs, or infographics may need detailed image descriptions.
